Lowes sells picnic table kits for around $100 but that just seemed kind of expensive, especially since I have two guys who like to do this sort of stuff. The last plan I sent to my husband was for this "bigger kids" picnic table plan that I found on Ana-White.com. I would love to have it on the back porch since the kids have outgrown their current Little Tikes toddler table.
We also had been talking about a headboard for my son's room made out of scrap wood. One Sunday, out of the blue, he and my little boy disappeared and came home with a truck bed full of scrap 2 x 4's. (we have a lot of construction going on around us.) He whipped out this little headboard in a couple of hours.
My husband really enjoyed working on the headboard project. I think gave him a little diversion from all of the yard and house projects we had been doing. He decided to tackle the picnic table and went out on another scrap wood round up, but he lost steam and the project sat incomplete for almost a month.
I took the kids on a little weekend trip to visit my mom and the hubby said he was going to finish up the table while I was gone. Yea! I was really looking forward to putting a little 4 foot table on my back porch so the kids could eat their lunches out there...
Now really, I know my husband and I know what can happen when he is left unsupervised. So I shouldn't have been surprised to come home and find the four foot "little kids" table had somehow morphed into an eight foot table!!!!
Despite the size, the table turned out great. He sanded down all the rough spots and added some stain that we already had in the garage. He also added a little distressing with a chain and hammer. My 6 year old even got in on the distressing action and added a few dents with a screw driver.
It was a little heavy, so we did have to get someone to help up move it in to place, but now it looks great in this little clearing on the side of our property...
The kids and I decided to christen it by having some homemade cherry scones and milk on it yesterday morning.
Yum!

Great table... I think a big table is better than a kids table because you can all enjoy it! You have a talented hubby!
