Scattered Thoughts of a Crafty Mom

How to Make a Customized LEGO® Playlist for your Little LEGO® Fan

Do you have a LEGO® fanatic in the house?  If you have a boy between the ages of 4 and 9, I am not surprised if your answer is yes...

Whenever my son has a new LEGO® creation, he begs me to take a photo to send to Dad while he's at work.  Of course I do that (and usually share it on Instagram or Facebook too...)

Just a few of his latest creations...

In addition to LEGO®'s we also got my son a Kindle Fire for Christmas. (He had outgrown his other hand held device, and we hoped the Kindle Fire would keep him entertained with books, videos and games.)

One thing I worry about is video content he many stumble across on accident. I have the safety filters applied to my YouTube account, but you never know what might slip through.

Well, guess what- did you know that YouTube has an official LEGO® Channel? The LEGO® Channel has 500+ videos for kids and they are adding new ones every day. Creating your own custom playlist means the kids can watch fun content on YouTube (which both of my kids love ), and I don't have to worry as much about inappropriate content.

The reasons I love the LEGO® Channel is, number one, it is free and we can access it from anywhere there is WiFi. The videos are kid friendly and most importantly, when you build your custom playlist and add videos from the LEGO® channel it keeps non LEGO® content from being recommended during playback.

My son is really into Ninjago and LEGO® City. So when I created his playlist, I mostly included those videos. You can check out our playlist here:LEGO® Playlist.

Making the a play list on YouTube is fairly simple. Here are the steps:

1. Create a YouTube account if you don't already have one and log in.

2. Go to theLEGO® Channel. Watch a few videos if you like, you can browse by play set/theme.

3. While you are watching the video you want to keep, click on Video Options in the lower right hand corner:

4. Choose add to playlist.  A sign in box will pop up whether you are signed in or not, just click it.

5. A box will pop up telling you to add your videos to an already created playlist or create a new one. Type in the name you want to give your playlist and click: Create Playlist.

It's a little confusing here, after you click Create Playlist, nothing happens. Click the small minimize button at the upper right corner of the black box and it will take you back to the video. Then just click Video Options again and Add to Playlist again.

4. Now your playlists should show up. Click your LEGO® playlist to add the video. It is sort of confusing again because nothing happens, but as long as the green plus shows next to the playlist, the video has been added. (As you can see from my playlists, I am trying to learn how to quilt and frost cupcakes...)

That is all there is to it, now you can go though all the videos and add a s many as you want.  So far I have added 20 videos for him.  That is almost 45 minutes of content.  I want to spend a little more time with him watching the videos together and helping him add a few more videos.

I allow him 45 minutes of game and video time while I am preparing dinner on the weekdays.  I sat him down yesterday and showed him his new LEGO® Playlist.

Look at his little face, he loved it!

I couldn't even get him to look away from the videos to give me a thumbs up!

We have a dentist appointment this week and I plan on bringing our kindle fire and entertaining everyone with LEGO® videos while they wait their turn.  It will be a great way to keep my guys from acting like little maniacs in the waiting room!

Thank you to LEGO® and Technorati for being sponsors. I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls Collective. All opinions expressed here are my own.
