Blinged-Out Raglan Tee (free pattern)

I took my lil’ missy with me on a recent trip to Hobby Lobby.  She loves looking at all the different fabrics just as much as I do.  She was especially drawn to all the glitter and sequined fabrics displayed for Halloween, so I let her pick one to use in a new raglan top.

She chose this black multicolored sequin fabric.  It was very pretty, but I had the hardest time finding a fabric in my stash to coordinate with the fabric.  I finally settled on using this dark coral colored rib knit I scavenged from a top in my recycle bin.  The original top had a very deep V, so I was just able to squeeze out enough fabric for a new top. (I kind of regret using the coral top, now that her shirt is finished.  The coral fabric just looks a little bit “tired.”)

It’s still pretty cute and perfect for school.

I used my Raglan Top Pattern and didn’t really make many changes other than shortening the length and sleeve and doing a slightly different sleeve finish.

I figured the sequined fabric would be too itchy to just fold over and hem and I didn’t want the look of binding showing on the sleeve.  I decided to use the sleeve pattern, and make a facing to finish the bottom of the sleeve.  If you’re interested in trying this method, here’s how I did it:

Use the bottom of the sleeve pattern and cut a 1.5 inch tall piece (on the fold.)

Sew the edges together to match the sleeve.  Line up the sleeve and sleeve facing, right sides together.

Sew, 1/4 inch from the edge and trim.

Flip the fabric around and press if you can.  (I did not press for fear of melting the sequins.)

Pin and sew 1/2 inch from the edge.

Trim excess fabric.

Flip sleeve right side out and admire your finished sleeve!

  1. Having a problem with the pattern- I cut to size 4, but the sleeve seam where you attach to the body is much bigger than the front piecesleeve seam or the back sleeve seam.
I’ve now cut the fabric! I should have checked.
Have other people encountered this, or have I done something wrong?
