I’m not one of those relaxed, carefree, go with the flow moms. It is just not in my DNA.
When I had my first baby, I was pretty clueless about new babies, and it was a rough couple of months… Once I discovered the magic of a schedule, I stuck to it and everything turned around. (I recommend reading Happiest Baby on the Block and Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy child.)
When baby number two came around 18 months later, I definitely had to get a little more flexible, but for the most part we stuck to a solid eating/sleeping schedule. (I know I annoyed family members by scheduling stuff around mealtimes, naps and bedtimes but our schedule was for me just as much as it was for the kids…)
I was a baby proofing queen – gates everywhere. Everything put away, locked up and strapped down, outlets covered and bathroom faucets valves shut off. Even with all that, my little guys still managed to get into trouble.
Sharpie markers scribbled all over the backseat and windows of Daddy’s truck? (Plus all over a new pair of Crocs.) … Check…
Markers as lipstick? …Check…
Neglecting to somehow baby-proof a slippery tile hearth and nearly knocking out a tooth? …Check…
Finding a razor blade in the yard that a construction worker negligently tossed out and then testing out how sharp it was on the tip of your finger? …Check… (I was not home for this one!)
How about putting a square duplo lego in your mouth having it twist around and getting stuck behind your front teeth? …Check… (This one happened when I left the playroom to get a cup of coffee. I got the lego out after a minute or two, but not before being so scared and spilling said coffee all over the light colored carpet and costing us most of our security deposit.)
And worst of all, (I still get upset and teary when I think about this one…) Not double checking that the maid service put the electrical covers back on the outlets after they vacuumed and rushing up to a screaming child and finding a metal barrette sticking out of an electrical socket. (My son told me “fire jumped out and landed on his foot.”) If we had been in an older rent house instead of a newly built home with the special gfci outlets, I shudder every time I think about what could have happened…
