I am a member of the Collective Bias Social Fabric community. I have been compensated by Collective Bias and their client, MasterCard to share my experience using MasterCard while on our vacation in the Caribbean.
|This picture almost looks fake doesn’t it? I took it with my phone right after the sun went down. The beach looked like this every evening. (Though sometimes with more people.)|
It’s been a couple of years since our family has been on a “real” vacation. (Weekends with the family don’t count.) I’ve been pinching my pennies and managed to save up enough for us to have a trip to Cancun for two whole weeks! We stay in a condo that rents by the week and it has a full kitchen, so we pretty much prepare all our meals. (This saves so much money, I could not imagine how much we would spend if we had to eat out every meal…)
When preparing for an extended trip out of the country you have to be prepared for so many different things. Medications for illnesses, special food (Yep, I’m so picky that I have to bring along food items like instant oatmeal, granola bars, Splenda, Starbucks instant iced coffee, individual coffee creamers, and a couple of boxes of chicken helper.)
Another thing you have to think about is how you will handle large purchases, meals out, hotel bills and/or emergencies. Many people plan to use credit cards for these items so they don’t use up all their cash, but you have to keep in mind that destinations outside the US, particularly the Caribbean and Mexico do not usually accept all cards. (Especially American Express and Discover.)
I knew this going in since Cancun has been our destination of choice since before we were married. When acceptance matters, I knew my MasterCard would be all I would need. (I also always call my CC company and let them know I would be using my card out of the country, to ensure there will be no problems.)
We ate out a few times, did an excursion and and also shopped a little. (There is a fancy mall right next door and we also went to a little outdoor marketplace and another plaza too). Everywhere we looked, we saw signs like this: MasterCard accepted.
Our condo had wifi, (off and on) so I was able to Instagram throughout our trip. These are just a few pics I posted. If you are not already following me on Instagram, you can find me here:
The picture below is my favorite photo from the entire trip. (Also taken with my phone.) I added a canvas-texture to the picture and I want to print it out and use modge podge to make a faux-canvas display…
(You can see a few more pictures I shared on Google Plus.)
All in all, we had a great trip! (Though it is always nice to be back home.) I am already starting a new savings plan for the next one. Hopefully it will only take one year to fund instead of 2…
