I’ve been doing some back to school sewing these last few weeks, though most of it has been tops, dresses and leggings for my little Missy. Other than the shorts for this post, I haven’t sewn much for my son. It can be difficult to find things to sew for boys, especially once they hit a certain age.
This particular pattern (the Classic Polo) from the Peek-A-Boo Pattern Shop has been on my to do list since it came out. When Amy emailed me to be part of the fall tour for her pattern shop, I already knew I wanted to sew this polo shirt. (I have a wee bit of a procrastination problem, so if I hadn’t been part of the tour, the the shirt would probably still not be sewn… Please tell me I am not the only one who suffers with this issue?)
The fabric I used for the Polo is a cotton blend knit from Girl Charlee. (I think it was part of their vintage revival collection, which is no longer available.)
He had a pretty good time modeling the shirt for me. I even had Dad come out and toss the ball around a bit for a few pictures…
I love that this pattern comes in a size range of 3 months to 12 years. It makes me very happy that I can sew this pattern for several more years.
According to the size chart, he would officially be in a size 7, but I went ahead and sized up so he could wear the shirt next spring and summer too. (The fabric is definitely light weight.)
I’m so pleased with the way the shirt turned out and even more pleased that my son loves it too!
I will say, I had a bit of difficulty with the construction of the placket and attaching the collar (mostly the collar.) Though, I was expecting this shirt to be a bit more of a challenge than my normal simple peasant dress-style projects…
After an hour or so of fiddling, I finally realized, if I took out a few more stitches at the top of the placket, I could fold everything in place and re-stitch it. So if you decide to give this a try, don’t be afraid to remove a few stitches to make it work!
I’m excited to make a few more of these shirts. Now that I know what I am doing, my next shirts will be super quick to make.
