I am always on the lookout for quick and simple ideas for our breakfasts and after school snacks.  This Raspberry Oatmeal and Yogurt Smoothie recipe certainly fits the bill.  And what kid doesn’t love a smoothie?

I love putting my blender to work – (I’ve blogged about it before in these recipes: Healthy Chocolate Dip, Homemade Apple Butter and Chocolate Hazelnut Spread and I can’t not include this awesomely easy 3 Minute Raspberry Sorbet recipe (even though I was using a different blender for that one).

When possible, I like to use greek yogurt in place of regular yogurt and I bet you could use almost any type of berry in this recipe and get great results.

I do have a couple of recommendation in regards to the oatmeal.  Make sure you are using the old fashioned oats and not the quick oats and be sure to blend the first set of ingredients enough to help grind up the oatmeal – if you don’t, the oatmeal could still be a little crunchy.  (If your blender is not very strong, you could also try grinding the oatmeal in a coffee grinder first.)Raspberry, Oatmeal and Yogurt Smoothie: (Recipe adapted from Martha Stewart)
  • 1 cup ice
  • 1/2 cup frozen raspberries
  • 1/2 cup plain lowfat yogurt
  • 1 banana
  • 1/2 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 tablespoon honey (or equivalent other sweetener)
  • 1 cup juice or coconut water (I used almond milk)
Instructions:
  1. Add the oatmeal to the blender and pulse a few times
  2. Add liquid and yogurt to the blender, blend for a minute or two.  (Make sure the oats are pulverized)
  3. Add remaining ingredients and blend on high power until all your ingredients are blended and smooth.
Enjoy!

  1. Jamie, this is lovely. It would be great if you linked it to Food on Friday: Shakes & Smoothies. The showcases from this Food on Friday have not yet been selected. This link will take you to my home page where you will find a sidebar with links to all the different Food on Fridays. So that I know you have linked and can be sure to pin to the board I have for each one, please do leave a short comment. Cheers

  2. I had a cheap little Sunbeam food processor in college which I used to make healthy concoctions, including ones really similar to this with yogurt, oats, and fruit. My roomies thought I was weird….At last, reading your recipe (and the positive response to it), I feel validated! I'm sure your smoothies are delicious (your picture is enticing and artful, by the way…love it). Lynaea @ EveryDayBloom.com

  13. These are delicious! I realized after I started making these smoothies a few months ago that a 4 hour fridge soak is necessary to get the full effect of the oatmeal. I read it on The Yummy Life, and after I tried her recipes it really added to the flavor and now I Make my own with the same concept. They are also great to make ahead and freeze!! Thanks for sharing 🙂
