I made this Halloween skirt for my daughter using my free flat-front skirt pattern, and it turned out to be such a cute outfit for wearing throughout October. This easy Halloween skirt tutorial shows you how to turn the original pattern into a festive version with Halloween fabric, a coordinating border, and decorative trim.
The smooth front waistband looks adorable with a T-shirt tucked in, while the elastic back keeps the skirt comfortable and easy to wear.

A Cute Halloween Skirt for Girls
I originally made this skirt because I had several projects planned with some cute Halloween fabric, and a new skirt for my little missy was at the top of my list.
I have always liked a flat-front skirt with a tucked-in shirt. You get the smooth look of a traditional waistband at the front, while the elastic at the back makes the skirt comfortable and easy to pull on and off. Not every elastic-waist skirt looks good with a shirt tucked in, but this one does!
This Halloween skirt is made using my free Flat-Front Skirt Pattern. The complete tutorial includes cutting measurements for girls’ sizes 2 through 16 and step-by-step construction photos.
For the Halloween version, I used a dark Halloween print for the main skirt, added a bright orange border, and finished it with sparkly ribbon for a bit of pop. The contrasting fabric and trim add extra detail without making the skirt much more difficult to sew.

Supplies Needed
- 1 to 1⅝ yards of Halloween-print quilting cotton, depending on the size
- ⅜ yard of coordinating fabric for the contrasting bottom border
- ½-inch elastic
- Optional ribbon, ric-rac, or decorative trim

Follow the original tutorial to make the skirt, then customize it with Halloween fabric, a contrasting bottom border, and decorative trim. You can follow the same idea with fabric for any season or holiday.
Choosing Fabric for a Halloween Skirt
Quilting cotton works well for this project because it is easy to cut and sew, and it comes in so many fun Halloween prints.
Look for fabric featuring pumpkins, black cats, friendly ghosts, bats, witches, spiderwebs, or candy corn. You could also use a less obvious seasonal print in black, orange, purple, or lime green.
You can make the whole skirt from one fabric, but adding a contrasting border is an easy way to make the main print stand out. Ribbon, ric-rac, or another decorative trim placed above the border adds even more color and detail.
Halloween Skirt Sewing Tips
- Prewash your fabric. Wash and dry the fabric before cutting so the finished skirt does not shrink later.
- Check the finished length. Measure the child from the waist to where you want the skirt to fall. Children of the same clothing size can be different heights.
- Press as you sew. Pressing the waistband, border, and seams during construction will give the skirt a cleaner finish.
- Add the trim before finishing the skirt. Sew ribbon or ric-rac onto the flat fabric before completing the final skirt assembly. Follow the construction order in the main tutorial.
- Be careful with directional prints. If the fabric has characters, words, or another one-way design, check the direction before cutting each piece.
- Choose washable trim. If the skirt will be worn often, make sure any ribbon, pom-poms, or decorative trim can handle regular washing.
More Ways to Customize the Skirt
You can easily change the look of this Halloween skirt without changing the basic pattern.
- Use one Halloween fabric for the entire skirt.
- Add a contrasting orange, purple, green, or black border.
- Place ribbon or ric-rac just above the bottom border.
- Use glow-in-the-dark Halloween fabric.
- Make a subtle fall version with pumpkins, leaves, or a small floral print.
- Use leftover fabric to make a matching trick-or-treat bag.

This shirt actually came from Gymboree (or Crazy 8) But I remember it well and it would be easy to recreate with a stencil, fabric paint and some ribbon. (or with heat transfer vinyl) I will try to make something to print!
