Sometimes I’m a bit slow in getting out a promised tutorial.  I have good intentions, but life often gets in the way.  Often, by the time I get to the project, the season for sharing the particular item has passed or sometimes I just loose interest in the project and have trouble motivating myself to get it done.

This reversible scarf is the perfect example of that…

I shared the pattern/tutorial for this simple ruffle skirt (size 3 to 10) last winter and promised the instructions on how to make the coordinating reversible scarf.  I do have a couple of other scarf tutorials on the blog -this lightweight single-sided infinity scarf (very popular), a ruffled scarf and this one for the boys.   It’s been almost a year, but I finally have this reversible scarf tutorial ready for you!

All three of the knit fabrics I used in today’s project came from Funkalicious Fabrics on Esty.  I did not order them at the same time, but they coordinated perfectly!  When my missy saw the scarf, she was thrilled!  She loved the neon leopard print I used. I have plenty left, so I’m certain it will be making another appearance soon.  School picture day is tomorrow and she has already chosen to wear this outfit.

I just love how these fabric coordinated!

Reversible Infinity Scarf Tutorial:

Materials Needed:

  • 2 coordinating knit fabrics (58 to 60 inch wide fabric works best)
  • basic sewing supplies

Project tip:

The measurements given below are best for girls under 5 feet.  Any taller and yo will want to add about 4 inches to the length of each fabric.

Products used and Recommended:

  1. My favorite fabric shop for knits:  Funkalicious Fabrics and Girl Charlee. My favorite shop for cottons and other fabrics: Fabric.com.
  2. My Sewing Machine: SINGER 9960 Quantum Stylist, my coverstitch: Janome Cover Pro 1000cpx
  3. My Serger: Brother 1034D 3 or 4 Thread Serger or you can just use Pinking Shears
  4. Rotary Cutter
  5. Ball Point sewing needles
  6. I love my large ruler and large cutting mat, but you may prefer to start of with a smaller Cutting set
  7. Dritz Dual Purpose Marking Pen and Fray Check
  8. Wonder clips (I didn’t use these in the post, but they are just awesome!

Step 1: Cut your fabric

Fold fabric in half, selvage to selvage.  Cut 1 strip from each fabric, 29.5inches by 6.5 inches.  (Fabric was on the fold, so you will have a 59 inch strip.)

Step 2: Sew the scarf.

Line up the 2 fabric pieces, right sides together and sew along the long sides (top and bottom) 1/ inch from the edge.

Flip the fabric right side out and press.

Line up the inner edges of the scarf and pin together.

Another view of how it will look:

Start sewing along the edge of the pinned ends.  (1/4th inch from edge and removing the pins as you go.)

Keep turning the edge of the scarf, sewing as much of that seam as you can.

You will be left with a small opening, which you can hand stitch closed.

That is it, you are done!  How easy was that?

  1. Thank you! I had two pieces of antique kimono fabric and wanted to make one of these but I could NOT work out how to finish join the two ends. It did my head in. It might seem simple but it was turning me inside out. 🙂
    Thank you
