DIY Halloween Treat Bags

We have a Halloween themed get-together next week and my lil’ missy wanted to bring something to pass out to her friends.  We picked out a few items from the dollar store and I got to work customizing some small treat bags to hold all the goodies.

Make your own custom treat bags. Perfect for birthdays, holidays and parties!

These treat bags are so cute!  I can picture so many uses for these little bags…  Classroom treats, party gift bags, treasure holders, and the list can go on and on.  The bags are quite simple.  Just one piece of fabric, folded and sewn together.  It’s fairly quick to make several at a time, using the assembly line method.

I used bakers twine for the tie, but ribbon, bias tape or other decorative cording would work too.  The possibilities for customization are endless.  You could stamp, embroider, use an iron-on, cricut or silhouette heat transfer vinyl, piece together scraps or just use special Halloween fabric to make them your own.

How to make a treat bag

To customize my bags for Halloween, I used plain white fabric and then made a screen print with my little screen print making kit. (Love this thing! Remember my pillows?)  It only takes 25 minutes to create the silk screen and it makes the process so much easier decorating multiple items.  You could use a cutting machine to make a stencil or a heat transfer vinyl image just as easy.

Ready to make you own Halloween treat bags?

Here’s what you need:

  • A bit of fabric
  • Ribbon, or twine for the drawstring
  • Ruler, scissors, fray check and other basic sewing supplies

Instructions

Cut fabric into pieces, measuring 15 inches by 5 3/4 inches.

Fold fabric in half, right sides together.  Measure 2 inches down from the top and draw a line with a disappearing ink fabric marker.

Sew along the sides of the bag, 1/2 inch from the edge, up to the line you drew.  Back stitch a few times at the top to help secure the bag.

Fold the top edges of the bag over 1/2 inch. (towards the center of the bag.)  Press with iron if needed, though you can probably get away with “finger pressing.”

Fold the top over 1/4th inch, then fold over again so the edge of the folded top is even with the line you drew.

Repeat for the other side.

Pin in place and sew along the bottom of the fold to create the casing.  Don’t forget to back stitch.  Take care to not sew stitches through the other side/casing.

Trim edges.

Flip bag right side out and press.

Use a safety pin to pull string/ribbon through both casings.  Trim strings and use fray check as needed.

Decorate as desired.

How cute is that!

Now fill your Halloween treat bags full of candy and other spooky goodies!
