Fleece Pom Poms

A reader recently sent me a message asking me if I had a tutorial on how to make fleece pom-poms. I’ve made lots of pom-poms over the years and even have a post about adding pom-poms to my fleece beanies, but I realized, I have never written out a tutorial on how actually to make them.

So, you guessed it, today’s project is how to make fleece pom poms for your fleece beanies

The good news is, pom-poms are super simple to make. You only need a few strips of fleece, a piece of cardboard, and some scissors to make them!

Tips:

For a larger pom-pom, you will want to make your cardboard an inch or so taller and will need an additional one or two strips of fleece. (The more strips of fleece you use, and the more you trim, the “tighter” the pom-pom will be.)

Materials needed to make Fleece Pom-poms

  • 4 to 5 strips of fleece fabric, 1/2 inch wide (Strips should be WOF, meaning cut from edge to edge. Fleece by the yard is usually about 52 to 54 inches wide.)
  • An additional 1/2 inch by about 10-inch strip of fleece
  • 4 by 8-inch piece of cardboard
  • Sharp scissors

Neatly wrap the long strips of fleece around the cardboard. (I used 4 strips of fleece. For a tighter pom-pom, you can use 5 strips.)

Create the loops by gently sliding the fleece loops off the cardboard.

5. Shape the pom pom

Flatten the pom-pom and trim the fleece strips. Flatten the pom-pon in the opposite direction and keep trimming until you are satisfied with the size and shape. When the pom-pom looks like it’s almost done, gently roll it in your hands. This fluffs the pom-pom and shows off any areas that need more trimming.

FAQ’s

What Kind Of Fleece Should I Use To Make A Pom Pom?

Any type of fleece works, regular, anti-pill, luxe, solid, or patterned. Just use what you have.

How Much Fleece Do I Need To Make A Pom Pom?

This will depend on the size of the pom-pom you want to make, larger pom-poms need more strips of fleece. In today’s project, I used 4, 54-inch long strips of fleece to make a 3-inch pom-pom. You can use long continuous strips or several shorter strips; since you are cutting the loops, it really doesn’t matter what size strips you start with. (I did find it easier to use a long continuous strip.)

What Is The Best Way To Cut The Fleece For A Pom Pom?

A rotary cutter and cutting mat make is the easiest way to get long, straight strips. But scissors will work, too; just make sure they are sharp.

How Do I Attach My Pom-Pom To A Project?

Different projects will require different methods of attaching the pom poms. For a beanie hat, you will want to use a needle and thread, and hand stitch the pom pom to your project. For a project like a wreath or a rug, you will want to leave the string you used to tie around the loops long, and then use the string to attach the pom pom.

  1. Thanks for posting, do you have any suggestions for securing them so none of the pieces come out. I want to put them on a dementia blanket or twiddle muff.
    Love receiving your ideas.

    1. Jamie Sanders says:

My only suggestion would be to put a few hand stitches through the loops before tying the string around the bundle. Maybe some others will have a suggestion.

  2. When I make yarn pom poms, I use 2 pieces of cardboard. Wrap as usual. Then, slip the piece of yarn used to tie the whole thing together between the 2 pieces of cardboard and tie it snugly. Then cut the other side. This helps prevent the odd piece of yarn from trying to run away. I’m sure this technique could be used similarly with the fleece strips.
