Tips to help you plan the best Family Game Night!
(Thank you to Hasbro Gaming for teaming up with me to bring you this post. )
We all know family time is important.
Time spent together as a family strengthens bonds and helps our kids feel more confident and secure. Playing games together also teaches kids social skills, like taking turns and being a good winner/loser. Today, I’m sharing my best tips on how to plan the best family game night!
There’s no question, younger kids love family game night. Leave it up to them, and they would pull the games out every night. It becomes a bit more of a struggle to get everyone together (happily) as they get closer to the middle-teen years. We all have deadlines, activities, and commitments that pull us in different directions, and it seems like the biggest challenge we face, is really just carving out time from our busy schedules.
I have a few tips to help you make sure your next family game night is a success!
How To Plan a Family Game Night
1. Choose a night that works for everyone.
Plan it ahead and put it on the family calendar! For older family members, sync it to their phone/computer calendars and set up auto reminders!
2. Plan a meal everyone likes.
Can’t go wrong with takeout or DIY pizzas!
3. Invest in a few new games.
You’ll definitely want to have more than one game to play. You can never go wrong with the classic games from Hasbro Gaming. Hasbro has so many family games- Monopoly, Scrabble, Jenga, Operation, Twister, Hungry, Hungry Hippo; (one of our faves) just to name a few. These classic games are a great way to bring families together! Even better is that they are affordable, so much fun to play and make great gifts and stocking stuffers!
Do make sure the games are age appropriate. (Maybe even let everyone choose one and set a time limit per game.)
Hungry Hungry Hippo was a huge hit at our house. One word of advice though… Be sure to put the game away before going to bed. Otherwise you might have an extra early wake up time set to the sounds of very loud chomping!
4. Be sure to include a selection of yummy snacks and finger foods:
5. Set some rules.
This is where it gets a little hard… Everyone wants to win, but for the game night to be fun and successful there should be a few rules discussed ahead of time. Ban the electronics, keep whining to a minimum (learning to be a good winner/loser) and have clear rules about cheating!
6. Have fun!
