Apple Pie Dump Cake
If you aren’t familiar with a dump cake, it is literally a cake where you dump all the ingredients into a pan and bake it up. This apple pie version bakes up juicy apple pie filling with loads of cinnamon and spice, all topped with a rich spice cake and oat crumble. It’s super easy and amazingly yummy.
This is the perfect dessert to whip up when you are low on ingredients and time. It uses mostly shelf-stable items that you can easily store in the pantry until the occasion arises. All you really need is fresh butter, and you’re all set.

Ingredients And Notes For This Apple Dump Cake
(Ingredients at a glance, you will find the full printable recipe with ingredient amounts in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post.)
- Apple pie filling | I used canned apple pie filling but Homemade apple pie filling works great too. You could even use this Stovetop Cinnamon Apple recipe as well.
- Spice Cake Mix | One boxed spice cake mix. If you cant find a boxed spice cake mix, you can use a yellow cake mix and add these spices: 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg, 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger,1/4 teaspoon allspice or cloves.
- Cinnamon | A touch of ground cinnamon adds sweetness and some extra spice.
- Butter | I usually use 1.5 to 2 sticks of butter on my dump cakes. Make sure the butter is very cold, so you can slice it thin.
- Rolled oats | (Otherwise known as old-fashioned oatmeal) You can use quick-cook oats in a pinch, but old-fashioned oats produce a chewier texture that is desired in the fruit crisp topping. For an even yummier topping, you can mix in a handful of chopped nuts, like pecans or walnuts.
- Brown sugar | Brown sugar adds sweetness to crumble on this apple cake.
How to make Apple Dump Cake
1 Prep: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Prepare a 13 x 9-inch casserole dish with cooking spray.
2 Prepare: Line the bottom of the casserole dish with the cans of apple pie filling. Sprinkle cinnamon over apples. Followed by the dry spiced cake mix. Top the cake mix with oats and brown sugar. Cut the butter into slices and place them evenly over the oats and brown sugar layer.
3 Bake: Bake for 40-45 min or until lightly browned on top and the butter is melted.
4 Serve: Serve warm as is or with ice cream.
Recipe Tips
- To avoid powdery patches on the top of your dump cake, line up the butter slices very close together, so that when the dump cake bakes, the butter will melt and cover the entire cake top.
- If you find your topping is getting too brown before the end of the cooking time, you can cover the cake tightly with foil.
- Serve warm with Cool Whip, homemade whipped cream, or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Variations
- Add raisins or chopped nuts to the oat topping.
- Leave out the oat crumb topping and just use cake mix and butter. (I love yellow cake mix when not using the crumb topping.)
- Use a different cake mix. Yellow or white works fine too.
- Use pumpkin pie filling instead of apple pie. Yum!
- For extra oomph, you could add a caramel sauce or vanilla frosting drizzle to the top of the cake. (My favorite frosting for drizzling is: 2 tablespoons butter, 1 1/2 ounces of cream cheese, 3/4 cup of powdered sugar, 1 tablespoon of half and half, and 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla. Mix all the ingredients until smooth and drizzle over the top of the cake. (Tastes just like the frosting on cinnamon rolls!)
Storage Suggestions
Cover leftovers with foil or plastic wrap and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Can this recipe be cut in half?
Yes, use an eight-by-eight casserole dish, and everything else should be the same.
Can this recipe be made in the slow cooker?

Can I freeze the leftovers?
Yes, allow the Apple Dump Cake to cool, then transfer the leftovers to an airtight container. (You could also wrap the casserole dish in plastic wrap, then foil and freeze the whole dump cake.) Store in the freezer. For best results, eat within three months.
Thaw leftovers in the fridge overnight. (If freezing in a glass casserole dish, let the cake come to room temperature before placing it in the oven to avoid the glass shattering.) Reheat in the oven at 350 F. for about 15 minutes or in the microwave.
