Ingredients + Tips
(Ingredients at a glance, you will find the full recipe with ingredient amounts in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post.)
- Apples | You can use any kind of apples for this recipe. Fuji, Red Delicious, Granny Smith, pick one type or mix them up. If you want a sweeter apple galette stick to fuji or red delicious.
- Flour | All-purpose flour is what you want for this recipe. When measuring your flour, make sure to spoon the flour into the measuring cup and level it off with a knife. Scooping the measuring cup into the flour container packs the flour and can cause you to use too much flour and result in a dry pastry.
- Water | Water is water, but the water must be ice cold. Don’t try to skip this by just using cold running water.
- Oil | Any neutral oil will work, use what you have.
- Sugar | White sugar or brown sugar will work for this recipe. You can also use a sugar substitute-just be sure to use the conversion chart on the package.
- Lemon Juice | Fresh is always best but concentrate will work in a pinch. If you buy a bag of lemons you can use the extra for decoration in a vase or bowl! If you are using concentrate, you’ll need 1 tablespoon.
- Baking Powder | Acts as a leavening agent.
- Egg white | Optional for an egg wash to brush over the top edges of your crust.

Apple Galette Recipe Tips
- Don’t slice your apples too thin. 1/4 inch slices are the best size. They will soften up, but not be too mushy.
- Cold Ingredients: The crust will come together better if the water is very cold. This plus chilling the crust helps the crust keep its shape.
- Crust: When measuring your flour, make sure to spoon the flour into the measuring cup and level it off with a knife. Scooping the measuring cup into the flour container packs the flour and can cause you to use too much flour and result in a dry pastry.
- Apples: If you prefer you can cut your apples into bite-size pieces instead of slices. They can be peeled or leave the skins on for a pop of color.
- Don’t overcook your Apple Galette! Make sure you bake only until the dough turns golden brown.
- For the ultimate shortcut apple galette, you can use apple pie filling and a frozen pie crust.
Recipe Variations
- Frozen pie crust – Making a Galette at home can be as complex or simple as you’d like it to be. If you don’t have time to make a pie crust, you can also use a store-bought pie crust. Thaw it, roll it out, and fill!
- Crescent Roll Crust – Who doesn’t love a crescent roll? This gives the apple galette a soft, flakey, and buttery crust. Unroll the crescent dough, then use a rolling pin to roll it out like a dough. Puff pastry is a delicious option as well!
- Pears – Do you love pears? A combination of apples and pears is very yummy. (I have a Slow Cooker apple-pear crisp that you might enjoy.)
- Other additions – You can also add raisins or nuts. Either walnuts or pecans work. (I recommend soaking your raisins for about an hour for baking, you can soak in water or rum.
- Various spices – The fun thing about Galette is once you learn how to make it you can customize it to fit your family’s taste buds. Try adding ½ teaspoon of ground cinnamon, nutmeg, pumpkin pie spice, or apple spice to this recipe.
- Turbinado Sugar – You can also try adding a sprinkling of turbinado sugar to the top of the crust to give it a crunchy texture.
- Different apples – Use a combination of apples to create a more sophisticated flavor.
- Toppings – Finally, try drizzling your apple galette with honey, maple syrup, caramel sauce, whipping cream, vanilla ice cream or powdered sugar icing.

Reccomended Tools
- Apple peeler/corer/slicer. This tool is a lifesaver if you have to peel and slice your own apple. I have had the pampered chef version with the stand for years, but this one looks good too, it is less expensive, and has a suction cup instead of a clamp.
- Rolling pin
- Flat baking sheet with lip. (to catch any escaping juices)
