Easy chevron quilt pattern: Have you ever wanted to make a chevron quilt? The chevron quilt pattern is so modern and pretty, I just love it. Today I am going to show you how to make a chevron quilt pattern, the easy way!!!
I am sure you have all been waiting on pins and needles to find out who the winner of this quilt was!! The winner was Leanna O. She has claimed her prize and hopefully is having picnics on it already… Congratulations Leanna!
I have had a few people ask about the pattern I used. Chevrons are surprisingly easy, you don’t need a pattern! (Though if you want to make a quilt to a specific size you will have to do a bit of math.)
Since this was my first chevron quilt, I wasn’t sure how long all the cutting would take or if I would loose my momentum before the project was done. Happens all the time, lol! I figured it would be my best bet and definitely the easiest to use pre-cut fabrics.
I used 2/3 of a layer cake from Moda called Hello Luscious and 1/2 a layer cake of solid white from Moda’s Bella Solids line. (I lucked out as this set was on sale, but there are so many pretty sets to choose from on Amazon and Craftsy.)
Using precuts can definitely make a project expensive, so on my last trip to the fabric store I picked up a 10.5 inch square ruler to use with my next project.
I wanted to demonstrate how easy to is to piece together a chevron quilt….
How to make a Chevron Quilt – the easy way! (easy Chevron Quilt pattern)
With this method, you first cut your fabric into squares. Any size you want, though mine were 10 inches since I used the precuts.
Line up 2 squares of alternating colors, right sides together and sew all the way around the square. (It’s kind of hard to see what I did since I used white thread on white fabric, sorry about that…)
Then use a ruler to cut the squares from corner to corner.
When you flip the pieces over, you will have 8 half square triangles.
Just arrange your fabric pieces into the chevron pattern.
Keep going and you will see the pattern come together:
I snapped this shot w/ my phone late at night… |
Or diagonal stripes. (I love these stripes…)
One thing to keep in mind when cutting half square triangles this way is that you definitely need to use spray starch when pressing the triangles flat. The fabric is cut on the bias and could potentially stretch out when sewing. I used spray starch and didn’t really have any problems.
You can definitely make one of these!
I can’t wait to make another one for myself!

Hi there! I absolutely love the ease of this tutorial! I have not made a quilt in nearly six years now. This would be a great idea for my daughter's nursery room! My only question for you is how did you FINISH the overall quilt? 🙂
Jamie says
By, "finish" I am guessing you are asking how I quilted it? If so, I used my sewing machine and stitched along the chevrons (which was kind of a pain, since I had to keep maneuvering the quilt back and forth) and I also stitched in the ditch where the squares came together. I used my sewing machine for the binding too.

I love this quilt. I am new to sewing, like brand new! I really want to make my boys these chevron quilts for their twin beds for a xmas present. I'm wanting to give myself plenty of time so I'm trying to get started. I have been through tons of blogs and directions, but I can't find how much fabric I would need for that size. Looks like most are lap or baby blankets. Does anyone have any pointers for me? I would greatly appreciate any help. Thank you!

Too funny, I knew the method for getting all those hst's and also for the piecing – but this seems magical anyway. Must be your dreamy colors. What a stunning little quilt. -Lettyb

Your quilt is beautiful! I'd love to make one, but a quick question first! Do you have any issues with your small squares coming apart since there's no backstitching (after cutting from corner to corner)?

So cute! How much fabric would I need for this quilt? White verses patterned?

I'm not sure of the yardage, since I used a layer cake. I used 40 10.5 inch squares. (20 white and 20 patterned

Denise Briese says
Question.. I started this particular quilt found on pinterest! Thanks for a great tutorial. I purchased two moda sets of layer cakes… they are slightly different I thought it was me. Has this happened to you? I had to rip the out.. frustrated.
Denise [email protected]
Jamie says
I have had that happen with fat quarters, but not with smaller cuts- how annoying! You would think after paying that much $$ you would get equal sized cuts. The only thing I can suggest in the future is to make sure your cuts come from the same "lot" and make sure to use starch on your squares, because they might stretch a bit since the triangles are cut on the bias.
Good luck,
Jamie

Good morning. I have been searching and searching looking for a chevron pattern. I have been so intimidated because of the angles and triangles. I have to tell you that you just made this so simple for me! My eyes have been open to the simplicity of it! Thanks for writing it out in simple terms and putting it out there!

Hello!
I am just finding this amazing quilt and pattern now! It is amazing and I would love to try it. I’m new to quilting so I have a couple questions for you if you wouldn’t mind answering them.
You said that buying the layer cakes can get expensive so you got the 10.5 ruler. If I was to do this with out the layer cakes, around how much of each fabric would I need? It seems like getting the layer cakes is cheeper..but like I said, I don’t really know much about quilting yet. About how much would this whole thing cost if you bought the fabric separate instead of the layer cake?
Thanks!
Megan
Jamie says
I’m not sure, it will definitely require a little math to figure out.

I just found this chevron pattern and love it! I got all my pieces cut and sewn together and then made the diagonal cuts. BUT, I cannot figure out how to sew it together! I laid it out like I want it to look, but since I am so new to quilting, I am at a loss for how to actually sew it together without having some seams on top!! Help, please!

How do I figure how many “white” squares I need to cut, and how many “other fabrics” I need to cut? I’m making a CA King quilt. Help, please. Thanks!!!
