Free Summer Vibes Quilt Pattern
Now that I have gotten the hang of my new long arm quilting machine, I have been sewing and quilting like crazy! Finishing up old quilt tops and dreaming up new quilt designs.
For today’s quilt project, I’ve got a beginner-friendly geometric style quilt pattern to share with you. I decided to name this quilt “Summer Vibes Geometric Quilt” because the colors of the quilt remind me of sunshine, blue skies, and pink sunsets – all the makings of a perfect summer day.
Although depending on the colors you choose, I guess you could call it spring or winter vibes, lol.
Why you should make this quilt
- The Summer Vibes Geometric quilt is a beginner quilt pattern, that looks like it could be complicated, but is actually super simple to make.
- The free quilt pattern uses 3 colors and a combination of 2 sizes of squares (to make half-square triangles) – and that is it!
- The pattern includes a printable template for you to save and use.
- I used solid fabrics, but a combination of like-toned prints could work too.
- The short-cut half-square triangle method I show you in the quilt tutorial uses 2 different colored squares to easily make the half-square triangles.
- The pattern includes 3 sizes: mini, lap, and twin size, so you can make whichever suits your needs. The pattern would be very easy for you to make even larger if desired. Simply add more squares.
Summer vibes Quilt Color Variations
The colors I used on my summer vibes quilt were:
This quilt would be amazing in other color combos as well.
I included a quilt coloring sheet along with the pattern to help you design your quilt and choose the colors.
A few of my favorite solid color combos: (these are all Kona solid colors)
Just imagine how crazy you could go with prints!
Quilt Assembly Tips:
Scant quarter inch seam allowance: When sewing your half square triangles together, I recommend using a scant quarter inch seam allowance. This will give you extra room to square up the half-square triangles.
Squaring up: Do not skip the step of squaring up your half-square triangles! I use this template (I love that you can use it on multiple sizes) but this one from Bloc-Loc looks interesting as well. (interesting but pricey, lol) I did try out a ruler that squares up the half square triangles before pressing, but that ruler does not take into account the amount of fabric loss when the seams are pressed open – so those blocks were a 16th of an inch smaller. (Which would be ok if my quilt were all half-square triangles, but this quilt is a combo of squares and half-square triangles.)
Piecing squares together: When piecing together your squares, I recommend keeping a copy of the pattern layout at your sewing machine so you don’t make any mistakes. It helps to number the rows on the template and pinning a scrap piece of paper with the row number, to each row of squares/blocks.
Sewing rows together: When sewing the blocks together in a row, I recommend sewing 2 blocks together at a time, rather than one block after another, after another. If you sew the rows together one after another, the straightness of your piecing can get off.

Step 1: Cut Fabric:
Step 2: Make the Half Square Triangles
- Line up one square of fabric 2 and one square of fabric 3.
- Use a ruler and draw a line from corner to corner.
- Sew a scant quarter inch on both sides of the line you drew. (I recommend a scant quarter inch for 2 reasons – 1. When you press the half square triangle open, you lose a bit of fabric. 2. With a scant quarter-inch, it leaves you a bit more room to square up your half square triangles
- Use your rotary cutter to slice the triangles apart on the line you drew.
- Press the half square triangle open.
- Trim/square up your half square triangles. (I like using this ruler from June Tailor, since you can do multiple sizes with one ruler.)
- Repeat till you have the specified amount of half-square triangles needed for your quilt size.
Step 3. Assemble the quilt.
- Use the provided template to lay out the quilt pattern. (I love my portable quilt wall for this. It hangs right on my wall, so no more laying my quilts out on the floor! Even better it folds up when not in use.)
- Sew your square together row by row with a quarter-inch seam allowance.
TIP: when sewing the blocks together in a row, I recommend sewing 2 blocks together at a time, rather than one block after another after another. If you sew the rows together one after another, the straightness of your piecing can get off. - Sew rows together 2 at a time and then sew the row/blocks together.
Step 4: Quilt and bind as desired.
Refer to the fabric chart above for backing and binding fabric requirements.
Now doesn’t that photo just give you summer vibes?
