Materials needed to make a Windsock + Notes
- Toilet paper roll | Reduce, reuse, and recycle – start saving those empty toilet paper rolls.
- Blue Paint and Foam Brush | We used standard craft paint and a standard foam paintbrush.
- Crepe paper streamers | we used crepe paper streamers which can be found in the party supply section of your local store.
- Craft twine – I used jute twine today, but baker’s twine or cotton twine will work great too.
- Paint markers – we used acrylic paint markers but feel free to use your favorite paint or craft markers, if you don’t have paint parkers, you could also cut the stars from white construction paper and glue them onto the tube!
- Scissors, ruler, stapler | A stapler is super convenient for attaching the streamers and twin, but you could also use hot glue instead of a stapler.
Project notes/ Variations
- Ideas for decorating your patriotic windsock include, freehand with paint markers, craft paint, stickers, or using a sponge stamp. Use your imagination!
- You could use tissue paper as an alternative to crepe paper for the streamers.
- For the hanger, you could substitute ribbon or a pipe cleaner instead of the craft twine.

Materials needed
- Toilet paper roll
- Blue craft paint
- Foam brush
- Red, white, and blue crepe paper streamers
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Small stapler
- Staples
- Craft twine or ribbon
- White paint marker or white craft paint
Instructions
1.Begin by painting the toilet paper roll for the windsock. Take an empty cardboard toilet paper roll and paint it with blue craft paint using a foam brush. Once painted, set aside to dry for at least 5 minutes.
2.While your toilet paper roll is drying let’s prepare the streamers for the windsock. Gather the red, white and blue crepe paper streamers. Cut one strip of each color into 12-inch strips. Set aside.
Next, cut a 6-inch strip of twine. Set aside.
3. Assembling the patriotic windsock: Staple the red piece of crepe paper to the inside of the bottom of the toilet paper roll. You’ll want to insert the paper into the bottom of the roll vertically ensuring about ¼ of an inch of crepe paper is in the tube so that you can secure it with the staple. Once secured, repeat this step with a piece of white and blue crepe paper spacing them equally.
4. Cut each strip from the bottom up to create a more flowy streamer.
5. Attach the hanger for the patriotic windsock: Take the previously cut 6 inches of craft twine and insert one end into the tube and staple it to the side. Make an arch with the twine and repeat this step on the inside of the opposite side of the tube to secure your hanger.
6. Decorating the Windsock: Decorate the previously painted toilet paper roll with white stars. Be creative! You can free-hand the stars with a white paint marker or white craft paint and a small paintbrush. Hang to dry for at least 10 minutes.
Once dry your patriotic windsock is ready to fly!
Your patriotic Windsock Craft is complete! Celebrate America’s birthday by flying your very own windsock from your porch or balcony. Happy crafting!
