What is a Trifle?
A trifle is a layered dessert that typically consists of cake, fruit, custard, and whipped cream. Trifles can be made with a variety of different types of cake and fruit, and they are often decorated with nuts, chocolate, or candy. They can be made ahead of time, which makes them a great option for entertaining.
No matter what ingredients you choose, trifles are light and refreshing, making them a perfect ending to any meal. So next time you’re looking for a delicious dessert that will impress your guests, be sure to give a trifle a try.
Ingredients in Berry Trifle
Want to try your hand at this trifle recipe? Make sure you have the following ingredients on hand. (Ingredients at a glance, find the full recipe in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post.)
- Mixed Berries | Any combination of fresh strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, or raspberries will work. You will need a total of 4 cups of berries
- Pound Cake |You can, of course, use homemade pound cake, but I really like how the storebought poundcake holds up in this recipe. (Sara Lee is my go-to for store-bought pound cake.)
- Raspberry Jam | Strawberry Jam or Blueberry Jam will also work if you don’t have or can’t find raspberry.
- Instant Vanilla Pudding | You can use any brand of pudding for this berry trifle. Sugar-free vanilla pudding works fine if you want to lighten it up or you could even make homemade pudding. The recipe calls for 4 cups of pudding in total, so that is usually 2 of the smaller boxes. (Just check the number of servings on the box.
- Cool Whip | Yes, you can use homemade whipped cream if you prefer. You will need 4 cups. If using Cool Whip, that is about 1.5 small tubs or 1 large tub.
How to Make a Berry Trifle
1. In a trifle bowl, create a layer of butter cake using half of your cake. Then, using a sauce brush or spoon, spread a thin layer of raspberry jam over your cake.
2. Using half of each ingredient, spread a layer of pudding, a layer of cool whip, and a layer of sliced strawberries over your raspberry jam.
3. Repeat these layers using the remaining ingredients but using blueberries in place of strawberries for the next layer.
4. End your layers with cool whip topping and your remaining mixed berries. Create a design with your berries or scatter them evenly over the top of the trifle.
5. Chill the assembled trifle in the refrigerator for a minimum of 1 hour (4 hours would be ideal) and serve chilled.
Variations
This is a berry trifle recipe, but there are so many ways to change up a trifle recipe for a unique flavor combination:
- Substitute mixed berries with all one type of berry or any other preferred fruits. Like this Strawberry Trifle.
- Use a different flavor of pudding: Chocolate, lemon, white chocolate, or cheesecake would be great.
- Use a different type of cake: You can use pound cake, sponge cake, last fingers, brownies, or even chocolate cake for a chocolate trifle.
- Use different fruits: Peaches, nectarines, or maybe mangoes, pineapples, and bananas for a tropical trifle.
