Baked Orange French Toast Recipe

I LOVE french toast!

What I don’t love, is standing over the stove, cooking the toast a few pieces at a time…

My solution to cooking only a few pieces of french toast at a time?  Baking my french toast in the oven on a sheet pan!

Sheet Pan French Toast

The Baked Orange French Toast baked on a sheet pan, came out crispy and sweet with just a hint of orange and vanilla.

I added the powdered sugar for the photo, but it certainly didn’t need it.

Baked French Toast is so easy to make, there’s no reason to wait for the weekend to make this recipe! It makes an excellent “breakfast for dinner meal”.

The original recipe called for day-old raisin bread, though I used our regular thin-sliced bread since that’s what I had on hand.  (I like to buy the store brand 100% whole wheat and the Walmart brand is my fave because it is sliced slightly thinner.  Saves on calories. )

Next time I will make it with a slightly thicker bread to hold all that orange-vanilla deliciousness.

Ingredients:

  • 7 eggs
  • juice from 1 large orange
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 8 slices of bread
  • butter
  • powdered sugar (Optional)

How To Make Orange French Toast on a Sheet Pan

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 375 and grease your cookie sheet.

Step 2: In a medium bowl, beat together eggs, juice, milk, sugar, zest, vanilla, and nutmeg.

Step 3: Place bread in a single layer in a 13 x 9 pan or lipped cookie sheet. Pour egg mixture over bread. Let soak, turning once until liquid is absorbed. About 10 minutes.

Step 4: Remove liquid-soaked bread and place the slices on a cookie sheet and bake for 15 minutes.

Step 5: Turn slices and continue baking for another 10 to 15 minutes, until the french toast is browned. The thicker the bread, the longer you may need to bake the orange french toast.

Step 6: Dust with powdered sugar if desired and serve.

Recipe Tips and FAQ

Why is My Baked French Toast Soggy in the Middle?

  • Make sure you are choosing the right bread. You want something thick and sturdy to soak up all the liquid.
  • Make sure to let the bread soak in the liquid mixture for a good 10 minutes, so the bread has time to soak up the liquid.
  • You could try to soak the bread in a separate bowl before placing it in a single layer on the baking sheet/pan. Too much egg in the pan could cause the french toast to be soggy in the middle.
  • If you find your orange french toast is getting too brown, but still needs more time, cover the pan with a bit of foil until eggs are completely cooked.

Can this French Toast Be Frozen?

Yes, you can freeze your leftover french toast after baking. Wrap the toast with plastic wrap and then place in an airtight container. The toast will keep for2 to 3 months in the freezer. When ready to eat, thaw overnight in the fridge, place on a baking sheet, and bake at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes.

Can this Recipe Be Doubled?

Yes, but I do recommend using 2 baking pans to bake the french toast, so the toast is crispy.

Can I Put This Baked French Toast Recipe Together the Night Before?

Yes! This is a great recipe to make ahead. The longer the toast has to absorb the delicious orange, vanilla, and sugar, the yummier it will be!

Can I Cook this in a Frying Pan?

Of course, Follow the recipe through step 3 and then fry in a pan or griddle like you would normal french toast.

  1. This is a great Recipe. Easy to make, I was able to use oranges from my own tree 🤩 my entire family loved them, next time I need to make two batches…

  2. Serendipita Allsorts says:

Tried it – it was just lovely and so easy to make. And being a one-dish affair, easy to clean up too. The orange juice gave a slight acidic edge to the sweetness of the sugary egg custard. Most pleasant and fragrant. Tip: Could serve dusted with icing sugar and topped with blueberries..

  3. I already knew this would be delicious when I popped them in the oven and could not stand not eating them while the wonderful smell filled my house! It tasted amazing! The only thing is, it was burned, but the middle was still raw. So, Im not sure how to fix that… but it still tasted amazing!

  4. Nice flavor; used whole wheat bread

  5. I love this variation of French Toast! I will make it again for sure 😋
