- This mini quilt is the perfect way to use up your pink, red, and purple scraps or is perfect for a charm pack, layer cake, or fat quarters.

- The mini quilt can be made from start to finish in just about an hour (if simple straight-line quilting is used.)
Pattern Variations
The good news is this Valentine’s day mini quilt pattern can be used in so many ways. You could make the mini quilt and use it as a wall hanging or placemat.
- Make a mug rug. Reduce the cut squares to 2 inches and make an 8 by 6.5-inch mug rug.
- Make a table runner. Reduce the rows to 3 and then add as many columns as needed to fit your table length.
- Make a pillow. Reduce the columns to 4 so that the design is a square.
- Make a throw-size quilt. (I included the cutting guide, fabric amounts, and instructions for a full-size quilt in the pattern.)
Throw size version:
Here is a mock-up of a table runner in fall-themed fabrics. (Using Bookish from Art Gallery Fabrics.)
The fabrics I used in today’s quilts were a mix of scraps and fat quarters from my sew-colorful fat quarter club deliveries. (Never a shortage of pink around here.)

Quilt Assembly/Sewing Tips:
- Press and starch squares before sewing and cutting. It helps to get a precise cut.
- Don’t forget to check your seam allowance before starting to sew! Every time I start a project, I line my needle up using a seam allowance ruler. I also recommend this quarter-inch foot with the guide. (Just choose one that fits your machine.) You can use the seam allowance ruler with this foot, and once I have made the adjustment to my needle, the guide helps keep all my seams perfectly aligned.
- Nest the seams when sewing the blocks together.
- Sewing rows together: When sewing the blocks together in a row, I recommend sewing two blocks together at a time, rather than one block after another, after another. If you sew the rows together one after another, the straightness of your piecing can get off.
- Make the quilt larger or smaller: If you want to make the lap-size quilt slightly larger easily, you can add an additional or larger border or more squares/rows. You could also follow the pattern as is and use smaller or larger squares of fabric to change up the size of the quilt.

How to make the Valentine’s Day Mini Quilt
You will love how easy this quilt is to put together!
Easy Valentines Day Mini Quilt Sewing Instructions
Step 1: Cut Fabrics
Cut your fabric pieces according to the list above.
Step 2: Decide your fabric layout.
Layout all of your squares and decide the order that is most visually pleasing to you.
Step 3: Adding the appliqued heart.
Apply the fusible web to the square you will be cutting the heart from. (I like the steam a seam lite because it reduces fraying, and the adhesive is double-sided. It is also permanent and lightweight, so it won’t make your quilt stiff.)
Hand draw or trace the supplied heart template onto the back of the fabric and cut the heart out.
Find the center of the square where you will be adding the heart. (To find the center, just fold it in half, both ways, and finger press.)
Line up the heart in the center of the square and press with an iron.
Step 4: Sew the blocks together.
Starting with row 1, start sewing all the fabric squares together according to the template. I recommend sewing two squares together at a time rather than one after another, after another. This helps keep your squares lined up evenly.
Repeat for the next three rows.
Once you have seen all your rows together, press all the seams to one side, alternating the direction for each row. (This will make it easier to nest the seams when sewing the rows together.)
Sew the four rows together and give the quilt top a final press.
Step 5: Quilt and Bind.
Use a ruler to trim up the sides.
Make your quilt sandwich, baste the layers together with pins or basting spray, and quilt with desired quilting pattern. (I quilted my Valentine’s Day mini quilt with straight lines 1/4 inch from the block seams.) Stitch around the appliqued heart for added strength.
Bind, and you are done! (If you need binding tips, check out my pumpkin place mat tutorial and video.)
