Chocolate Lava Cake in the Microwave

We had a get-together with friends a few weeks back, and I was in charge of bringing dessert for everyone.

I’d been craving something rich and chocolatey, so I thought maybe I would bring a Texas Sheet Cake. While browsing around trying to find a good recipe, I stumbled across an old Pampered Chef recipe for a Chocolate Molten Lava Cake.

I was so intrigued by the description and the ease of this recipe that I had to try it out!  I know you’re not supposed to test out new recipes right before serving the dish to guests, but I had to do it.

I’m so glad I took the chance on this cake!  The recipe took less than 15 minutes to put together and cook and was divine.

Totally took care of my chocolate craving!

Getting a  pretty picture of this cake was a bit difficult, especially since I was taking pictures of the leftovers, but don’t let that fool you.  This cake rocks!

I originally served the cake with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream, but it’s so rich it might be better with just an icy cold glass of milk. (Or maybe a smaller scoop of ice cream, ha!)

Description

This Microwave Chocolate Molten Lava Cake cake is super easy to throw together and only takes about 15 minutes to make in the microwave!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box chocolate cake mix (plus all ingredients needed to prepare the cake- (eggs, milk, butter/oil.)
  • 1 container of chocolate icing
  • any 12 cup capacity microwave safe pan

Instructions

Instructions:

  1. Prepare cake mix as directed and pour into a lightly greased cake pan
  2. Using a spoon, drop scoops of icing on top of cake batter. Use all the icing. It should almost completely cover the batter. (don’t mix with the batter—just drop on top. The icing  will melt to the bottom and the cake cooks on top, like a pudding cake.)
  3. Cook 10 minutes in rotating microwave on HIGH or until done.
  4. Let cool for a few minutes, serve warm topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a glass of cold milk.

Enjoy!

  1. Trying to figure out the cook time if I did it in 1 cup ramekins, cooking 4 at a time.

    1. Jamie Sanders says:

I have only made it in the microwave, so I cant help with that.

This is SIMPLY the best! We started making this on vacation at the beach. Simple, quick & don’t have to heat up the house! We tried white cake with blue icing. We have used many variations. AWESOME 😎

    1. Jamie Sanders says:

How did the white cake with blue icing turn out. Was it marbled with blue or did the entire cake become light blue?

  3. This was the bomb! Made it for a family gathering and we devoured it.

  4. You can use the Pampered Chef microwave rice cooker too.

  5. I have the regular stone bundt pan. Can I use that?

    1. Yes you can, I do recommend adding 2 minutes to the cook time.

  6. What kind of cake pan works in a microwave? Especially a 9×13

    1. The pan does not need to be 9 x 13, just something microwave save that is 12 cup capacity.
      ex:
      9″ x 3″ angel-cake pan or tube pan
      10″ x 2-1/2″ pan
      10″ x 3-1/2″ bundt pan

I personally use a silicone bundt pan: http://amzn.to/2c3gDXq or a 10 inch round pan like these: http://amzn.to/2bu36fH, http://amzn.to/2bu6uqJ (I found mine at Target many years ago.)

You could also use any sort of deep dis casserole like this: http://amzn.to/2bxx8cz or this: http://amzn.to/2bwhenn

      Good luck,
      Jamie
