Ingredients in Saltine Toffee
Want to give this simple Saltine Toffee recipe a shot? Add these ingredients to your shopping list. (Ingredients at a glance; print the full list in the recipe card at the bottom of the post.)
- Saltines
- Butter
- Brown Sugar
- Chocolate Chips
- Pecans (optional)

See how simple the ingredients are?! Raid that pantry and see if you already have the ingredients on hand. (if you don’t have pecans, it’s just as good without them – I think the nuts just give a prettier presentation.
How To Make It:
Making toffee from saltine crackers is easy. I’ll walk you through how to make this sweet treat, and you will be hooked!
- Line a pan with foil or parchment paper and spray with oil or non-stick cooking spray.
- Lay crackers out in your baking dish in an even layer. Top with a handful of pecans (optional.

- Then melt your butter and brown sugar in a pan on the stove. (Bring to boil as directed in the printable recipe card below.)
- Pour the toffee mixture over the crackers and spread out as evenly as possible.

- Top with a few more pecans and bake in the oven for just a few minutes until the toffee starts to bubble.
- Remove the saltine toffee from the oven, sprinkle on chocolate chips, and let them soften up. Use a spatula to smooth the melted chips over the toffee.

- Let the saltine toffee cool, and then place it in the fridge to harden up.

- Break the toffee up into small pieces, and enjoy!

Saltine Toffee Recipe Tips:
- Preheat your oven beforehand so you can pop the crackers in the oven as soon as you pour the toffee layer over the crackers.
- Be sure to use a baking sheet with sides to prevent the toffee from bubbling over onto your oven.
- I have heard through online chatter, occasionally, people are having trouble getting the Nestle brand chocolate chips to melt.
(So strange, the current “thesis” is that Nestle has reformulated their chips, which are not as meltable.) A solution to this, if your chocolate chips won’t melt (of course, you won’t know until you sprinkle them on the hot toffee), is to scrape the chips off and microwave them with a tablespoon or two or shortening or coconut oil for 15 seconds at a time (stirring in between) until melted, then just pour the chocolate over the toffee. - Take care when breaking the toffee into pieces, as it is easy to get fingerprints in the chocolate.

Can I Use Different Crackers To Replace the Saltines
Absolutely! You can use Townhouse Crackers, Club, Ritz, and more. I personally love the saltine style, but feel free to test out other flavors of crackers to see what you prefer.
How To Store your Toffee
In an airtight container, store saltine cracker toffee in the refrigerator for up to 2 to 3 weeks. You can store at room temperature on the counter for about a week if the house is cool. You just want to make sure the toffee doesn’t get too warm on the counter or it can melt the chocolate and cause the toffee to be more on the chewy side. ·
Can You Freeze Saltine Toffee?
This toffee candy freezes well. Just ensure the candy is completely cooled and hardened before wrapping in an air tight container and storing it in the freezer.
Variations on Saltine Toffee
- Swap out crackers with others like Clubs, Townhouse, Ritz, or even Graham Crackers.
- Use white chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, or even butterscotch chips to replace the chocolate chips.
- Add on toppings like M&M’s, sprinkles, peanut butter chips, chocolate shavings, crushed peppermint, or just about anything to fit the holiday.
- Use candy melts to drizzle on top of toffee to add a mix of color to your candy.

I used milk chocolate chips. So good and addictive. Omgoodness.
My favorite. I do one with pecans and one with shredded coconut
I make this with peanut butter chips and love the flavor of the toffee and peanut butter together. I am also considering using butterscotch chips
This is a definite favourite for all ages . I use sprinkles for kid version and chopped nuts for adults.
It was a big hit. Super easy to make. Thank you for sharing.
No room in the fridge, so I am still waiting for it to cool! Fun to make.

Can you freeze the Saltine Cracker Toffee?
Yes, you can freeze the toffee. Let cool completely. Place in an air tight comtainer and freeze for up to 3 months.
Tastes good but chocolate separates from crackers when you cut it. Any ideas !
I did not have this issue, but after a a google search, the recomendations to keep your chocolate from seperating from the chocolate are to:
1. Use good quality chocolate.
2. Do not let the toffee layer cool too much. (the chocolate will not stick as well.)
3. If the butter separates out of the toffee and concentrates on the surface, the chocolate isn’t going to adhere to the toffee. If this happens, try blotting up excess oil with paper towels.
4. Instead of plcing the candy in the fridge to harden. Leave it on the counter to set up. This will make the chocolate less brittle.
5. Dust the toffee with cocoa before you put the chocolate on it, this give the chocolate something to adhere to.
6. Break the chocolate with your hands rather than a knife.
For my toffee, I used Enjoy Life mini chocolate chips. I made sure the candy was cool, then placed it in the fridge to fully harden. I then broke it into pieces with my hands rather than with a knife.
The last 2 years I have made this it has turned to sugar. What am I doing wrong?
Separating (and/or crystallizing where the toffee turns sugary and grainy) can happen with sudden drops or spikes in the temperature or with constant, vigorous stirring. It can also happen if the sides of the pot are scraped, reintroducing crystallized sugar pieces, or overcooking.
Does it matter if you use light brown sugar, or dark brown sugar?
I prefer the flavor of light brown sugar in this candy, but either will work.
I made this for the first time and it’s delicious. It was the easiest candy that I have ever made
Love it! Going to make it again for Christmas.
made this twice with a recipe that only used 1/2 cup butter and 1/2 cup of sugar,my butter was still a little frozen and I think that’s what caused it to be grainy or is it just me?
Why is my toffee grainy rather than smooth and clear?
Toffee gets gritty because the sugar has crystallized. Crystallization usually happens because you either let the temperature get too hot to fast, or sugar crystals formed on the sides of the pan while you were cooking and then spread through the candy mixture like a chain reaction.
This Stuff is the bomb, thanks!
Sounds so good. I must try this.
