Free Ear Warmer Pattern
The free ear warmer pattern comes in women and child sizes and has a printable pdf pattern that makes the project super quick and easy. It’s great with both fleece and lighter-weight knits. You’ll have a dozen whipped up in no time flat!
Why Sew this Ear Warmer Pattern
When the weather is cold and windy, we can all use a bit of extra protection for our ears! Personally, I try to get out and walk in the late afternoon/evenings when it’s sunny out. The one thing I can’t deal with is the cold wind in my ears. Gives me a screaming headache every time!
- This ear warmer pattern is the perfect solution for cold ears or headaches from the wind!
- This free pattern can be made using both fleece or other stretch fabrics. So if you live in a super cold location, fleece may be what you want or if you are in a more temperate climate, a lighter-weight knit ear warmer may be all you need. (The snow photos were taken during the great Texas snowpocalypse of Feb 2021. It was so cold, we really needed fleece ear warmers!
- It only takes about 15 minutes to whip up an ear warmer.
- Even better, you only need about a fat quarter size amount of fabric. So it is a great scrap buster pattern and it is also a perfect craft to make and sell or give as gifts!
Fabric Recommendations:
This particular ear warmer pattern was designed with a stretch knit in mind.
Fabrics that work well with the ear warmer pattern is:
- fleece with a bit of stretch
- sweatshirt or French Terry fabric
- light to medium weight knits
Tip: If you use a fabric with a significant amount of stretch, you may want to do a quick test fit before sewing the ends together. The extra stretchy fabric will require a more snug fit to account for the stretch. If this is the case, you can trim a smidge off of the ends to account for that extra stretch.
I made a version out of very stretchy regular knit, because let’s face it, here in Texas we rarely need a heavy fleece earmuff. But I do often just need a little something to keep the wind out of my ears. Works perfectly!
Ear Warmer Sizing Info:
This free ear warmer pattern comes in two sizes. Youth and Ladies.
The youth should fit the average 5 to 11-year-old and the adult should fit an average woman. (There is always a possibility I might add a toddler and xl size in the future- but for now, I only have the 2 sizes.)
If you need something smaller or larger, the pattern is fairly easy to size up or down.
To reduce the smallest size, before cutting the pattern pieces, trim about a quarter of an inch off the end of the pattern marked “fold”. Then follow the sewing instructions, stopping right before you sew the ends together. Do a trial fit and trim a few millimeters off each end if needed.
To size up the larger size, add an equal amount to both sides of the pattern. (You can refer to my hat sizing chart to get an idea of head sizes. Refer to the back of the head and forehead measurements for this pattern.)
Pattern Information:
The ear warmer is designed with a headband-like fit in the front, but grows slightly larger towards the back and has small rounded “flaps” that cover the ears. Keeping them toasty warm and also blocking that pesky wind! (If you want a headband pattern without the ear flaps, this pattern is very similar to my stretchy headband pattern.)
The pattern comes with a built-in .25 inch seam allowance. (sorry, I hate wasting even the tiniest amount of fabric.) If you like to sew with a larger seam allowance, you can just add it in when cutting.
