What exactly are Jello Shots anyway?
Jello shots are an alcoholic “shot” made with Jello, water, and some sort of spirit. (If made with off-brand gelatin, they might be referred to as jelly shots.) Jello shots can be made with just about any combo of jello flavor and liquor. Vodka and rum are the most popular options, but you can really use just about any liquor that is 80 proof or less.
Ingredients needed for Green Jello Shots
(Ingredients at a glance, you will find the full recipe with ingredient amounts in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post.)
- 1 – 3oz Box Jello– For these St Patricks Day Jello Shots, I used Lime Jello
- Boiling Water
- ½ Cup Vodka – Regular or flavored vodka will be fine. I used an apple flavored vodka for a bit of a sour apple flavor.
- Optional: Whipped Cream and/or Gold Sanding Sugar
Tools you’ll need
How to make Green Jello Shots for St Patrick’s Day
- Place the gelatin and boiling water in a medium mixing bowl and stir until the mixture is smooth with no grit on the bottom.
- Add the apple vodka and stir again.
- Using an injector or pourable measuring cup, fill each cup, leaving just a touch of room before the top.
- Place in the fridge for 3 hours or until solidified.
- Top with whipped cream and gold sanding sugar, if desired, and enjoy!
Recipe Tips
- Don’t skip the whipped cream – it gives an extra yummy kick of creamy sweetness to the sweet/tart jello shot. Plus it makes the shot look awesome!
- For easy filling and transporting, place the empty cups on a cookie sheet, then fill the cups with jello. Then you can easily move the jello shots in and out of the fridge and transport to the fridge to make it even easier.
- Use a measuring cup with a spout for easy pouring. And for easy clean up and storage, I recommend these 2 oz plastic cups with lids. However, you can use glass shot glasses for your jello shots, just serve with a small spoon!
FAQ’s
Can I use Sugar-Free Jello?
I don’t recommend Sugar-Free Jello for these Jello Shots. Something about the sugar-free ingredients makes the shots taste a bit medicine-y.
Can I double this recipe?
Yes, this recipe is perfect for doubling or even tripling.
Can I Double The Alcohol?
No, don’t double the alcohol as it will impede the gelatin from setting up.
Can jello shots be made ahead of time?
Yes, you can make the jello and add it to your cups and cover with the lid for up to 3 days ahead of time.
How Long Does It Take For Jello Shots To Set Up?
It takes about 2 hours for jello shots to set up.
How Long Do Jello Shots Last?
Jello Shots must be stored in the fridge and will last about 3-4 days in the refrigerator. (Although if you have kids in the house, I recommend tossing out any leftovers.) Do not leave them out on the counter after serving or they will re-liquefy!!
