One of my favorite things to do when meal planning is, before making my list, I always check the weekly sales flyers from my favorite stores.  One of the places we hit up all the time is Sprouts. There’s a Sprouts right by my hubby’s office and I often text him a list of items to pick up on the way home. (Usually on Wednesday, when you get to shop the previous AND the current week’s deals.)

A couple of weeks ago Sprouts had country style pork ribs on sale for a $1.99 a pound, (which is a pretty good price) so I had my hubby stop by and grab a couple of pounds.  (Along with strawberries, they were on sale, 2lbs for 99 cents! Hence my Strawberry Trifle Recipe from the other day.)

We still don’t have our outdoor grill area set up after moving. (We have a few other landscape things to finish first.) Lucily, the pressure cooker is a great way to cook meat when we can’t grill. I decided to do these country style ribs in my Instant Pot.  (And just FYI, this recipe works with baby back ribs as well.)

What’s the difference between country style ribs and baby back ribs?

Country style ribs are not actually ribs since they don’t have any rib bones. They’re cut from the loin, close to the shoulder, are meatier and have more fat than both baby back ribs and spare ribs. (Which is why I like them, lol.) They are more like thick delicious pork chop shaped ribs.

If you have a pressure cooker, but have never tried ribs in it, you really have to give this rib recipe a try.  The rib meat turns out so tender and because the cooking environment is so moist, the ribs don’t dry out.

If you’d like to add this pressure cooker pork ribs recipe to your meal plan here is what you need:

Ingredients needed for pressure cooker ribs:

How to make ribs in Pressure cooker:

You will love how easy ribs are to make in the pressure cooker.  Season the meat, add a bit of water, top with a little bit of barbeque sauce, select the meat/stew button, adjust the time, press start and that’s it!  No babysitting the meat, sweating it out by the grill and no heating up the kitchen!

How long do you cook ribs in the pressure cooker:

The cooking time for pork ribs in the pressure cooker is 20 minutes on high pressure for tender ribs, or 25 minutes for fall off the bone tender.  (Which is what I did.)

After the cooking time is complete, let the pressure cooker naturally release pressure for 10 to 15 minutes, then you can quick release the rest of the pressure.

Remove the ribs from the cooking liquid, top with a bit more barbeque sauce and let rest for 10 minutes before serving.

The result: flavorful, tender pork ribs!

  1. Will make again. put them in oven when done with sauce. they were perfect, in fact not any left!

  2. I use 1 cup of beef stock instead of water and after I pull them out I put them on a cookie sheet and add more BBQ sauce on top and put them under the broiler for just a few minutes to caramelize the bbq sauce. Delicious!

  3. I only gave this 4 stars because even the though the pork ribs tasted good, I thought the meat should have been more tender. Maybe it was my instant pot, it was the first time I ever used the meat/stew option instead of using the pressure cook option. I may have to stick with pressure cook, the meat always comes out moist and tender.

    1. Jamie Sanders says:

According to the instant pot website, there is no difference in the meat/stew and pressure cooker setting. https://instantpot.com/cooking-program-options/ The pressure cook setting is just a manual setting where you can change time and pressure to suit your needs.

      From Instant pot:
“PRESSURE COOK/MANUAL – The temperature, pressure levels, and cooking times can be controlled through the operation keys on the control panel. Here, press the Pressure Level key to adjust the pressure level and the +/- keys to change the cooking time.
MEAT/STEW – Best for cooking large cuts of meat at high pressure. For a soft texture, use the Less mode; for a very tender meat texture, use the Normal mode; for fall-off-the-bone texture, use the More mode.”

Also, I gave you options in the recipe for the tenderness of the meat. (cook longer for a more tender rib.)

  4. I made this and it was delicious. Thank you for the recipe.

The best ribs ever! Second time making them this way. So easy and not too many items to add. Tried two different rubs and we liked the mesquite best. I also added some liquid smoke. Used Baby Ray’s sauce and we love them all.

  6. I tried it! It came out great! I added more sauce and put them in the oven for 10 min at 400 to caramelize the sauce. Thanks

  7. I try this recipe for the first time today my ribs comes out perfect

  8. If I have about 6 pounds of ribs (2 packs), do I need to adjust cooking time? Can’t wait to try these in the instapot!

    1. Jamie Sanders says:

Hi, you don’t need to change the cooking time. The instant pot is pretty smart, the fuller the instant pot, the longer the recipe will take to come to pressure, which will naturally increase the time.
You might need a bit more bbq sauce just to make sure all the ribs are covered.

  9. Mark Livingston says:

Excellent recipe, will make it again!

  10. Good cooking directions and times, added onions between layers of ribs, next time try adding more sauce and broiling after.

  11. We tried this recipe, it came out yummy & the meat was perfectly ready to melt in your mouth soft but just enough to still cut in slices.

  12. Wonderful! Super simple and the meat came out perfect!
